BACK TO SCHOOL LIST

Amidst the school activities, a vision exam may not always be on the top of the list.  Nevertheless, many children experience vision changes at the onset of the school semester.

The summer months not only give students the chance to unwind from the school year, but it also provides some relief for their eyes.  As well, many children experience growth spurts that can also affect their vision.  The increase in visually demanding activities that include additional homework and reading assignments as children move through the school years often creates visual changes.  As such, we suggest scheduling eye exams a few weeks after the onset of the new school semester for a vision assessment.

Vision changes can have a tremendous impact on academic performance.  For instance, vision changes can affect a child's reading ability.   While we may mistakenly chastise the child for not completing the homework, the visual changes can actually make the task physically uncomfortable for the child.  Since studies have correlated the relationship between vision and academic performance in children, we encourage parents to consider visual changes as a potential explanation for decrease in academic performance.

We encourage you to add an eye exam to the list of things to do this fall!
